"The days of the Great Depression are long gone, yet the emotions expressed in songs from that era have transcended time. Sam Doores and Riley Downing took one of those devastating tunes, "I’m So Depressed” by Abner Jay, and married its hopeless lyrics to new, upbeat music from their band the Tumbleweeds. They even let it slip into an Otis Redding-style rocker toward the end. So while Jay was an early one-man-band descended from American slaves and Doores is a young white kid from New Orleans, their musical connection shows how everything old becomes new again — and hopefully a little brighter. Check out "Depression Blues” off their new album Holy Cross Blues."           Chris Parton -  CMTedge.com

Here's a new video of "I Got Found" off the debut album HOLY CROSS BLUES.

Sam Doores & The Tumbleweeds are Samuel Doores, (vocals, guitar harmonica, organ, banjo, autoharp and percussion)  Riley Downing (vocals, acoustic guitar), Dan Cutler (bass, vocals, trumpet), Tony Fricky (drums), and Matt Bell (lapsteel, lead guitar, vocals).  They  hearken back to a simpler time, when Rock N' Roll, Honky Tonk, Country and Soul music were pure.

"Sam Doores & The Tumbleweeds (from New Orleans, Louisiana) reach a bit further back into Americana history to earlier blues, gospel, folk, and country. Here you’ll find the call and response style field song ("I Got Found”) to foot stompin’ country ("Passing Through”), to 60’s folk style with a doowappin’ guitar ("Depression Blues” – based on "I’m So Depressed” by Abner Jay). This is modern day honky tonk stylings at its best."

The debut full length album from Sam Doores + Riley Downing & The Tumbleweeds was released 10/23/12 on Dollartone in Canada and The U.S. HOLY CROSS BLUES was recorded at Bombshell Studios in Nashville and produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for The Riff Raff) the album features original songs written by both Sam Doores and Riley Downing as well as select covers of artists including: Abner Jay, Cast King and Bobby Charles. Guest appearances from a number of friends of the band are included on the recording. Sam Doores and the Tumbleweeds formed in New Orleans, specifically in the Holy Cross neighbourhood of the lower ninth ward. The band quickly became a phenomenon, drawing good crowds in the city and building a solid fan base. In the summer of 2010 they hit the road and toured to Canada (Hillside Festival) and joined Hurray For The Riff Raff on a national US tour. On the road, Sam ran into Riley Downing. The two had met years earlier as young performers at the Woody Guthrie festival in Okemah, Oklahoma. Sam and Riley stayed up all night trading songs and in the morning, Riley joined the tour.

Over the following twelve months the two wrote and performed together with The Tumbleweeds and the result is HOLY CROSS BLUES. They  have since performed at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (2012) and appeared on HBO's TV series Treme. Sam Doores has been touring in Europe with Hurray For The Riff Raff; both as a band member and opening shows in the fall of 2012 and Alynda Lee Segarra and Sam Doores are finishing a duo tour in Europe before the release of HOLY CROSS BLUES.

In Jan. 2012 The Alabama Shakes noted Sam Doores and the Tumbleweeds as a band to listen to and watch for! Hurray for the Riff Raff, Alabama Shakes, Morgan O'Kane, Shovels and Rope and The Lumineers are amongst some of the fans of the New Orleans based group.

Riley Downing, Sam Doores & the Tumbleweeds are supporting The Alabama Shakes N.A. tour in March 2013 along with Michael Kiwanuka.
